Resume Hacks: The Stuff We Wish Someone Told Us

Let’s be real, building a resume feels a bit like trying to convince someone you’re the “main character” of the corporate world... on one page.
But here’s the thing, your resume isn’t about being perfect, it’s about being clear, smart, and strategic. So here are some resume hacks that we’ve learned the hard way (through many rejections, awkward edits, and way too many font choices).

1. Tailor It Like a Pro

Stop sending the same resume everywhere.
Tweak it for each role, highlight relevant projects, internships, or even coursework. A 10-minute edit can make all the difference between “Maybe later” and “Let’s schedule an interview!”

2. Use Keywords Like It’s SEO for Your Career

Most companies use ATS (Applicant Tracking Systems) that scan your resume for specific words.
→ Check the job description.
→ Pick out the main skills or tools mentioned.
→ Sprinkle them naturally into your resume.
Boom - you’ve just beaten the bots.

3. Quantify Everything You Can

Numbers make your achievements real.
Instead of saying “Handled social media page”, try:

“Increased Instagram reach by 45% through content planning.”
Even if it’s a college fest or a side project, numbers speak louder than vague adjectives.

4. Projects Count (Even the Messy Ones)

Did you build a mini website for a class? Run a bake sale? Help your club organize an event? Add it!
Projects show initiative and practical skills - the kind employers love. Just make sure to describe what you did and the outcome.

5. Keep It Clean (Design, Not Drama)

You don’t need fancy templates. Keep your resume readable, structured, and one page (unless you’ve cured cancer or built a startup - then, fine).
Stick to fonts like Calibri, Helvetica, or Lato, and use clear headings. Simplicity = professionalism.

6. Power Words = Instant Glow-Up

Use action verbs like:
“Developed,” “Led,” “Achieved,” “Collaborated,” “Launched.”
They sound confident and focused - like someone who gets things done.

7. Save It Smartly

Always save your resume as a PDF (unless stated otherwise). And name it like a grown-up:
✅ Name_Surname_Resume.pdf
❌ final_resume_version_7(1).docx

8. Bonus Hack: The 10-Second Test

Send your resume to a friend and ask them, “Can you tell what I do and what I’m good at in 10 seconds?”
If they can’t, trim the fluff. Keep the focus on what makes you stand out.

Your resume isn’t a list, it’s a story of growth, effort, and potential.
And like every story, it gets better with edits, feedback, and time. So don’t wait to make it “perfect” - just make it real. The rest will follow
